Established in 1968, the aim of Norðoya fornminnasavn is to inform about the region as well as collect artifacts from it.
Located in Klaksvík, the museum holds exhibitions in the historical building that housed the shop in the time of the Royal Danish Trade Monopoly and is also responsible for its maintenance.
Norðoya fornminnasavn is a private foundation.
Purpose
The purpose of the museum is to collect and preserve all types of historical materials, such as artifacts, documents and photographs about life and everyday activities of the people in the region.
Additionally, its purpose is to hold exhibitions and other informative events.
Logo
The photograph shows the only remaining logo of the trade monopoly. It is a carving of Hermes’ helmet from Greek mythology. This logo is found on a door frame in the old pharmacist’s apartment in the museum.
Hermes is the herald of the Olympian Gods who, with his winged helmet and shoes moves swiftly. He is the God of commerce, roads, travellers and bountiful crops.
Since the purpose of the museum is to preserve all historical material, the logo has been digitized.
